What is LTL Shipping?

LTL shipping explained: what it is, how the hub-and-spoke workflow works, and why it cuts cost without sacrificing control.

Definition of LTL Shipping

LTL shipping is a domestic ground service for palletized freight that is too big or heavy for parcel but not large enough to justify a dedicated trailer.

Less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping moves freight that doesn’t need a full trailer. Instead of paying for unused space, your pallets will ride with freight from other shippers. Carriers consolidate compatible loads, then route them together to cut cost per unit moved. For Amazon sellers, LTL sits between parcel and full truckload, balancing price, speed, and control.

Shipments are typically one to several pallets and fall within weight and size ranges that carriers can handle with forklifts. Pricing depends on density, dimensions, origin–destination pair, and required service options. Think of it as shared transportation that charges you only for the space and handling your freight consumes.

How LTL Shipping Works

  • Book and prepare documents
Submit an accurate pickup request with pallet count, dimensions, and weight. Create labels and a Bill of Lading (BOL) that include your PO, ASN, or FBA shipment ID.
  • Pickup and origin terminal intake
A local P&D truck scans labels, inspects pallet condition, and hauls freight to the origin terminal.
  • Linehaul through the hub-and-spoke network
Your shipment moves overnight with compatible freight toward the destination region.
  • Destination terminal and appointment setup
At the destination terminal, pallets are queued for local delivery. If the receiver is an Amazon FC, the carrier or your forwarder books the appointment window.
  • Final delivery and closeout
The driver checks in, backs to the dock, and unloads per site rules. The receiver notes any exceptions on the paperwork before signing. You receive a Proof of Delivery (POD) to match against the BOL and invoice.

What are the advantages of LTL Shipping

  • The first advantage is cost control

You pay for the space and services you use, not an entire trailer, which helps maintain margin on replenishment loads.

This also reduces the risk of overstock fees and long-term storage charges.Because capacity is shared, you can ship more often in smaller batches, smoothing cash flow and matching FBA sell-through.

  • The second advantage is flexibility

LTL gives you options for liftgate, inside delivery, residential, or appointment service when the delivery point demands it.

National and regional carriers cover most U.S. ZIP codes with published transit standards and tracking. Combined with port-side deconsolidation, this makes it easier to move imports inland quickly and keep buy boxes in stock.

What goods are suitable for LTL Shipping

Pallet-friendly, case-packed consumer goods (apparel, packaged home goods, non-haz electronics accessories) are suitable for LTL.

Because they can be effectively cubed, stacked evenly, and tolerate multiple touches in hub-and-spoke networks. This allows it to be transported without damage and to maximize the use of gaps when mixed with other goods.

Flat-pack furniture and boxed large items are suitable for LTL.

Similar to the above reasons why boxed consumer goods are suitable for LTL transportation, they have a standard size and weight.

They can be straped or shrink-wraped to pallets, reducing movement and damage as freight moves through terminals. Standard sizes and weights make quotes and labels consistent, cutting reclass or surprise fees. Carriers can forklift them quickly and add liftgate, appointment, or residential delivery, making big, awkward items simple to ship at a fair cost.

Dense, durable goods—tools, hardware, and non-hazmat bottled/canned liquids—are suitable for LTL.

Their higher density often yields better freight classes and fewer damage claims in shared trailers.

Conclusion

LTL shipping gives Amazon sellers a practical middle path between parcel and full truckload.

It reduces transportation spend for moderate volumes, supports frequent replenishment, and integrates well with port-to-door import flows. With disciplined prep and clear paperwork, LTL becomes a reliable tool to move China-origin inventory across the U.S. and keep your FBA listings stocked.
